With the launch of the OPPO Find N5 coming next week, many have been expecting that OnePlus would launch the Open 2 at the same time. OnePlus hasn’t been teasing the device on social media like they normally have, so we figured it would launch later this year. However, OnePlus has just confirmed that they are not releasing a foldable device this year.
OnePlus forum user, “Vale G” who is the product manager for OnePlus Open, published a post today titled “A note about our Foldable Strategy 2025”. He starts by talking about how proud they are of the Open, and how well it has been received, winning “Best Foldable of 2023” awards, which includes AndroidHeadlines.
Vale continues by saying “we’ve carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year.”
OnePlus is not departing the foldable category
OnePlus is also stating that their decision to pause on foldable for this generation doesn’t signify a departure from the category. They also talk a bit about what the OPPO Find N5 is doing, and how it “demonstrates remarkable advancements in foldable technology”. Which OnePlus plans to incorporate into their future products.
While this is unfortunate, particularly for those of us in the US that really were looking forward to a OnePlus Open successor, it’s not all that surprising. The foldable market is still quite small, and most other markets that OnePlus operates in, OPPO also operates in. Meaning the only country really missing out here is the US. And foldables haven’t really taken off much in America, unfortunately.
With that said, we can’t wait to see what OnePlus has up their sleeves for an Open 2 next year. Given that they’ll have over two years to improve the original Open, it should be a pretty significant upgrade.
