Summary: Perplexity is set to debut as a built-in assistant on Motorola’s upcoming 2025 Razr flip phones, offering users an alternative to Google Gemini. While talks with Samsung are still ongoing, Bloomberg reports that Perplexity has already inked a deal with Motorola — a major win for the fast-growing AI startup. The move could significantly boost Perplexity’s reach, especially if a future deal with Samsung comes through.
Perplexity is apparently in discussions with Samsung and Motorola about integrating its assistant onto these smartphones. In fact, Bloomberg is reporting that Perplexity has already reached an agreement with Motorola. And it is slated to be available on the new Razr’s next week as an alternative assistant to Gemini.
Bloomberg is reporting that the Samsung deal is still being hashed out, but the terms could include offering Perplexity as a default AI assistant option or preloading the app on phones. The publication also notes that a deal with Perplexity is difficult for Samsung, due to its pretty tight relationship with Google. Samsung has worked with Google to co-develop the current instance of Wear OS as well as Android XR.
However, Samsung has been working with the AI startup over the past few months, with Samsung’s investment arm, NEXT having backed the startup last year. Samsung is also discussing making another investment into Perplexity very soon. Perplexity has been working on another round of funding, which would double its valuation to $18 billion.
Motorola’s new Razr devices will include Perplexity as a default Assistant option
Next week, Motorola is set to unveil its 2025 lineup of Razr flip phones, and according to Bloomberg, Motorola will include Perplexity as a preloaded alternative assistant to Gemini. Currently, Motorola includes its own AI system as well as Google Gemini. And now you’ll be able to add Perplexity to that list. Offering another service as an assistant built into the phone wouldn’t be a first, as Samsung already does this with Bixby, though very few use Bixby and Samsung rarely even mentions it these days.
Perplexity being available on new Motorola devices would be huge for the startup. Though, currently it is unclear if Motorola will update its already available devices with the Perplexity feature.
If Perplexity could somehow get Samsung on-board here, that would really make a difference for the startup. Motorola is pretty big in the US and North America, in the top 5 biggest smartphone makers. But Samsung is routinely number one, often times swapping back and forth with Apple. That would bring in a whole lot of new users to Perplexity too.
