Meta has been making headlines for a few days, following the announcement of major changes around its content moderation policies. While some Meta employees have internally criticized one specific change, CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s upcoming plan might upset a few more. Now, Meta is reportedly planning to lay off some of its low-performing employees.
Meta will reportedly lay off more low-performing employees this year
The news comes via Bloomberg, which reported seeing an internal memo shared by a source at Meta. The memo, internally shared by Mark Zuckerberg, mentions the company’s plan to sack low-performing employees this year.
A part of the leaked memo from Zuckerberg reads, “I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster.” In the same memo, Zuckerberg notes that “performance-based cuts” will be done “extensively” this year. The social media giant also plans to hire new talent to backfill positions throughout the year.
The company will reportedly let go of as many as 5 percent of its employees. It’s important to note that Meta won’t sack every low-performing employee. If the future performance of such employees appears to be “optimistic,” Meta is likely to retain them.
The company will notify affected employees starting in February
Affected employees based in the US will be notified on February 10. Those outside of the US will be notified at a later date. Zuckerberg also adds that the laid-off employees will be provided with “generous severance,” which will be in line with what Meta offered in the previous job cuts.
As with most companies, Meta is only looking to stick with people who are meeting its expectations. No wonder the decision will help Meta achieve its goals for 2025, which the CEO notes “will be an intense year.” Moreover, the leaked memo hints that this year the company’s primary focus will be on AI, smart glasses, and the future of social media.
