1Password is one of the most comprehensive password managers available to users, housing some of the best features available, like Passkey compatibility. The latest add from 1Password is a new location-based suggestion feature called “nearby items.”
Password managers don’t just manage website passwords, contrary to what the name suggests. In 1Password’s case, users can save just about any sensitive data like secure notes, PINs, Wi-Fi passwords, and more. The app even supports credit card saves and autofill, which is just so nice to have on hand.
The newest feature from 1Password tailors the app to each user. It’s called “nearby items”, and it’s essentially a location tag for each password, PIN, or whatever saved item. When users approach that location, 1Password will suggest that you have the location-tagged item on hand. The items for that location will be at the top of the 1Password app in a “Nearby” card.
In certain scenarios, the app will display multiple nearby items sorted by distance, which is all done within the app for security. With that, you can see every bit of saved information you’ll need for anything in your area, whether that’s airport documents near the terminal or rewards programs for certain markets.
In reality, 1Password likely isn’t going to be the end-all-be-all for users because most items, like medical records and rewards programs, have corresponding apps. Still, the door is open for location-based items to become a huge part of 1Password.
1Password notes that this new feature is available in 1Password labs for now, so it won’t show up in your app unless you request it. Still, that process is quick and painless. It still means location-based passwords and saved items will likely come to the public as Passeys did after being in labs for some time.
