Tri-folds are seemingly the next big thing in terms of hype, and Huawei is trying to get in front of the trend by releasing the Mate XT Ultimate. The tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate now has a launch date.
Since foldables have started becoming a trustworthy form factor, OEMs are eyeing the step beyond that — the tri-fold. The tri-fold design essentially allows for one extra usable phone size, pushing it a step beyond a more simple foldable. It can be used closed with a smaller display or opened like a book-style foldable to reveal a bigger display. Beyond that, it can be unfolded even further, rivaling the size of a tablet.
Huawei has been teasing the Mate XT Ultimate globally for some time, though prospective customers have been left wondering when it will become a reality. On Twitter/X, the company posted a teaser video that set the Mate XT Ultimate next to the Mate X6 as two phones that would be released in 2025. The end of the video noted the likely launch date of February 18, 2025.
The event is set to be held in Kuala Lumpur. This comes as the device has already been available in China, though more regions are set to get the device. The US will very likely not see the launch, though Europe and other regions are surely on the list.
The Mate XT Ultimate will be a big step for foldable devices. Other companies like Samsung are already pushing for proprietary tri-fold options. This is almost exactly what we saw in the growth of book-style foldables design. After a year or two of publicly available prototypes, it may become just another option when users choose what genre of phone they want to buy.
Huawei did not note the price or exact availability in the teaser video, though we can assume the Mate XT ultimate will sit at around $2,800 when converted.
