How I Use Gemini To Create And Update Notes In Google Keep

Contents
Gemini has one distinct advantage over rival LLMs, it is integrated into Google’s most popular apps and services. While Gemini still suffers from numerous problems, these integrations can speed up how you use Google’s apps. Gemini can create and show your notes and lists in Google Keep and add items to existing lists. These basic functions are already covered by Google Assistant, but Gemini can do a lot more.
We’ll show you how to use Gemini in Google Keep effectively while avoiding some of the pitfalls that come with using an LLM like Gemini. However, Gemimi in Google Keep is only available with AI training enabled; you won’t be able to use Gemini in Google Keep if you want to maintain the highest levels of privacy with Gemini.

How to connect Gemini to Google Keep
Before you can share Gemini notes with Google Keep, you need to check that Gemini can speak to Google Keep.
To use Gemini with Google Keep, you must check that you have Gemini Apps Activity enabled. When you issue a prompt in Gemini, look for this alert. If you see it, tap Go to setting and enable Gemini Apps Activity. If you don’t see the alert, you’re good to go.
Enabling Gemini Apps Activity shares your prompts and personal data with Google for AI training. Google employees may read this data.
Once you’ve enabled Gemini Apps Activity, you must connect Gemini to Google Workspace. This lets Gemini connect to Keep, Docs, Gmail, and other Google apps. If you already use Gemini with Google’s apps, you don’t need to do anything else. If this is your first time using the Gemini/Workspace integration, here’s how to enable it.
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top-right of your screen.
- Tap Apps from the drop-down menu.
- Toggle the Google Workspace switch on.
Create and update notes from Gemini
Creating a note in Gemini is straightforward. You can ask it directly to create a note or build off an existing prompt.
How to create a note with preset items
If you already know what you want your note or list to contain, you can directly prompt Gemini. According to Google’s help docs, you can say:
- Create a note called [note name].
- Create a list called [note name] with [item 1, item 2].
So the prompt “Create a list called Shopping with cheese, fireworks, and quicklime” would result in this response from Gemini:
Tapping on the list in Gemini or opening the Google Keep app separately will show the list in Google Keep. With this prompt, Gemini copies your specifications word for word into its list. However, this functionality was already a core part of Google Assistant. To utilize Gemini’s power effectively, you’ll want to try asking it to create a note for you.
Use Gemini to create a list or note for you
Use the power of LLMs to create your list
If you’re unsure exactly what will go into your note, you can use Gemini to create the items. Google recommends these prompts:
- Recommend some activities for [goal or task] and save this to Keep.
- Tell me what steps I need to take to [goal or task]. Then, create a list in Keep.
- Find a recipe for [meal name] and create a list of the ingredients in Keep.
So the prompt “Tell me what steps I need to take to clean a bathroom. Then, create a list in Keep” would result in this response from Gemini:
Just like with any prompt to an LLM, the results will be slightly different each time you make the prompt.
Add an item to an existing list in Google Keep with Gemini
Update your shopping lists with Gemini
A common use of Google Keep is to create and maintain shopping lists. Gemini can create shopping lists for you, as we demonstrated above, but you can also use it to add items to existing lists.
If you know what you want to add, use the following prompts:
- Add [item] to my list called [note name]
- Include [item] to [note name] list.
A pop-up window reading “List updated” will appear once Gemini has added the item to the list.
You can combine this prompt with Gemini’s generative AI capabilities. For example, you can use the prompt “Tell me what steps I need to take to [goal or task]. Then, add these steps to my list called [note name]”.
So, the prompt “Tell me what steps I need to take to unblock a sink. Then, add these steps to my list called Bathroom Cleaning Steps” would prompt Gemini to create a list of steps and add them to my existing list.
What you can’t do with Gemini in Google Keep
You still have to manually delete notes
Gemini is great at performing basic tasks in Google Keep, but it can’t do everything. You cannot use Gemini to perform these actions in Google Keep:
- Modify a note.
- Delete notes and lists.
- Share notes and lists.
- View images and drawings.
- Add an image.
Once you’re aware of these limitations in Gemini, you can successfully use the LLM to manage your Google Keep lists.
Gemini has a long way to go before its capabilities match Google’s advertising. However, when used correctly, it can be a fantastic tool in your day-to-day life. If you’re excited about upcoming Google hardware, you’ll want to stay up to date on the latest Gemini developments.
