The realme 14 Pro Plus 5G has been announced and we do have our hands on it. It’s an interesting device, to be quite honest. realme is positioning this as the first cold-sensitive color-changing back in the world. What this means is that the back of the phone will change from a white pearl color to blue. It won’t be completely blue, but it does look pretty incredible.
Essentially, when the phone is below 14°C or around 61°F, it will start to turn blue. And the longer it is in the cold, the bluer it will get.
It won’t turn blue forever
Now, realme did state that because of how this technology works, it won’t turn blue forever. Basically, it’s using thermochromatic pigments, which do start to degrade in sunlight. According to realme, in their testing, this will work for about a year. And if you live in a warmer climate, like India, or Indonesia, you might never actually see this take effect, since it doesn’t normally drop below 14°C in those areas.
It’s an interesting feature for a phone, and surely a way to differentiate the realme 14 Pro Plus from the rest of the competition, but this won’t affect how you use the phone. Other than maybe using it without a case a bit more often (there is a case included in the box, however).
Currently, we can’t talk about what else is included in the realme 14 Pro Plus, as the global launch is still a few months away, but I will say I am quite impressed with this phone so far. It’s not a flagship, the realme GT 7 Pro is their true flagship phone – which is also marketed as a gaming phone.
This is a really cool look, and it’s one of the first phones with a color-changing back that has actually shipped. Tecno announced a Chameleon phone a couple of years ago where the back changed colors, but it never actually shipped. A few other companies announced color changing backs, including OnePlus, many years ago. Vivo did launch the V23 in India, which changed colors.
