A recent rumor from this week claimed to know the release date of the upcoming GTA VI, though it seems the release date was nothing more than a joke that got out of hand.
On January 29, a video game retailer from Uruguay put up a listing for the game. Showing not only the game’s release date but that it was a PS5-exclusive title. The rumor was picked up by a few outlets but was later found to be nothing more than a misinformation. This is according to the retailer, who made a statement saying they don’t actually know anything about the game’s release date.
Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have confirmed a release window. GTA VI is officially launching in 2025, with the rumored timing to be somewhere around the Fall. September 17 would line up with that. However, the retailer has admitted that they don’t have any privileged information about the game.
The GTA VI release date rumor started as an internal joke
While it’s entirely possible that the game will launch in September, there’s no information from Rockstar that’s been given to the retailer (XUruguay). According to XUruguay, the rumor started by talking about the release date of GTA V, which was September 17, 2013. “A new guy tells us the release date of GTA on Google (it was GTA V) and we said OK, then put it in (it was more of an internal joke that escalated) and then the speculation began,” XUruguay said.
The retailer further clarifies that neither Rockstar nor any of the other brands have mentioned release date information to them. GTA VI will still launch this year according to the game’s development studio. When is still anyone’s guess.
The game’s store page has been shut down
In addition to the statement, XUruguay has also shut down the GTA VI store page that previously mentioned the release date. It’s also a safe bet that this won’t be a PS5-exclusive. The game is likely to drop for consoles before PC. So it might be console-exclusive. That being said, it should launch for both PS5 and Xbox Series X at the same time.
It’s also worth noting that GTA V wasn’t released for Windows till almost a year and a half after consoles. That’s not to say the same thing will happen with GTA VI. Whenever the game releases, it’ll be “worth the wait” according to the Take-Two CEO.
