In August 2024, Google launched its latest streaming device, simply dubbed the “Google TV Streamer.” Google officially discontinued the “Chromecast” moniker with the launch of its first TV box. The company released a small software update for the device about a month after the launch. Now, the search engine giant has rolled out the first Google TV Streamer update of 2025. However, if you were waiting for new features, you will have to keep waiting.
Google TV Streamer’s latest update brings security improvements and bug fixes
Google’s first update for the TV Streamer device this year upgrades the firmware version to “UTTK.241210.003” (from “UTT3.240625.001”). The new firmware raises the Android security patch level to January 2025 (from August 2024). Notably, the update for the latest Google streaming device is 329MB, significantly larger than last year’s 36MB update.
Like the Chromecast, the TV Streamer’s latest update fixes multiple bugs and improves performance. It also includes a Voice Remote update that upgrades firmware version 1.00 to 1.02. After installing the main update, just reboot your TV Streamer device to proceed with the Voice Remote update.
The new update fixes an issue with the Dolby Atmos support. You can manually check for the latest firmware upgrade by going to Settings > System > About > System Update.
The update clarifies the confusion regarding codec support
Apart from the changes mentioned above, the latest update for the TV Streamer has clarified confusion regarding the support for some audio codecs. Google has confirmed that the TV box doesn’t support Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, DTS-HD MA, or DTS:X audio. The TV Streamer’s software listed these as detected audio formats in the Advanced Audio Settings earlier. However, the OTA has removed these options.
That said, the Google TV Streamer device is available for $99.99 on major e-commerce portals like BestBuy and Amazon. It costs double the price of the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) streaming device, but with all of the new feature upgrades, it is definitely worth buying.
