Google Cleaning Up The Gemini Model Picker

Google Cleaning Up The Gemini Model Picker

After changing the descriptions last week, Google is now updating the Gemini app’s model picker on the web.

If you’re a Gemini Advanced subscriber, the web’s model picker is being reduced to four offerings:

  • 2.0 Flash: Fast all-around help
  • 2.5 Flash (preview): Our next reasoning model built for speed
  • 2.5 Pro (preview): Reasoning, math & code
  • 2.0 Flash with Search history: Personalized to you

Google is no longer showing “Deep Research with 2.5 Pro” or “Veo 2,” which were never general-purpose models.

Instead, you can now only access those two capabilities in the prompt bar, with the latter being a new addition called “Video.” (Google has been testing this since late April.) Canvas, which got a new icon last week, rounds out the line. You can hover over each one for a brief description.

On wide desktop screens, all three are listed, but there’s a three-dot overflow button on mobile web. There are currently no changes to Gemini on Android or iOS.

We’re not seeing this change on free accounts just yet.

Overall, this update better emphasizes discoverability and what the Gemini app can do over the underlying models. The list itself was getting a bit long, with four a bit more manageable.

Once 2.5 Flash (and 2.5 Pro) exit preview, 2.0 Flash should be removed. Meanwhile, the end goal is presumably to integrate the personalization model into everything.
