TL;DR

  • Gemini is expanding to Wear OS devices.
  • Users will be able to talk with Gemini right from their smartwatch.
  • Google’s AI will arrive on Wear OS in the coming months.

It’s been a process in the making, but Google has gradually been replacing Assistant with Gemini on a growing number of products. In January, we discovered through an APK teardown that Wear OS would be the next destination for Gemini’s expansion. That expansion is now about to start as Google prepares to integrate the AI into your smartwatch.

Today, Google officially announced that Gemini is headed to Wear OS devices. It may take some time before the AI arrives on your wrist, however, as Google says the rollout will happen in the coming months.

Once Gemini becomes a part of your smartwatch experience, you’ll be able to use it to navigate your day just as you would if you were on your phone. However, it may be even more handy as you’ll be able to talk with Gemini in all kinds of situations where using your phone may not be the best option. For example, if you’re cooking and your hands are dirty, or while you’re riding a bike.

As Gemini is a large language model (LLM), you won’t have to use any specific words to interact with it; you can just use natural language. But you won’t just be able to talk with Gemini, as the AI can connect to your apps. So, you’ll be able to use the AI for functions like setting reminders or asking about that restaurant your friend emailed you about.

In addition to expanding on Wear OS, Gemini is also coming to Android Auto and Google TV. Google plans to talk more about this at its I/O event, which is scheduled for May 20.
