Gemini Is Still Replacing Assistant On Google TV, But Not Until ‘later This Year’

Google TV is going to see a significant shift in the coming months. Instead of the Google Assistant users have been used to interacting with for basic needs, Gemini will be the new AI helper. Gemini’s integration will be similar to what’s seen on Android devices, though it’ll be tuned for entertainment and education.

Google Gemini for Android was seemingly just the starting point. Over the last year, the AI model Google has been working on diligently has slowly begun to replace Google Assistant. That takeover is making it’s way to TVs, as well.

Google announced that Gemini for TVs is still very much in the pipeline, but it wouldn’t be coming until “later this year.” Considering we’re halfway through 2025, this could mean anywhere in the next three or 5 months. We were hoping to see the switch from Google Assistant sooner, but it’s seemingly going to take some more time.

At CES 2025, we got a good preview of what Gemini for Google TV looks like. Rather than the fundamental question and answer Google Assistant provides, Gemini goes a little deeper. The LLM offers more in-depth information on the topic at hand, much like the Gemini we know in Android.

Beyond that, the model is tuned to offer TV shows or movies with specific parameters. That includes kid-friendly shows or movies about particular topics.

Gemini will also change certain aspects of your TV, depending on the model. A new “on-screen hub” will eventually act as an information board when you’re near the TV, thanks to proximity sensors.

It was initially thought that Google might house this new advanced model under the Google Assistant moniker, but it looks like Gemini will perform a complete takeover, with the “Assistant” branding being retired during the rollout. This aligns with how the model is presented in other facets of Google.

Of course, all of that will be available when Gemini for TVs actually rolls out. No date has been set, but it’s expected sometime before 2026.
