Google didn’t waste a second after pushing out the stable Android 16. Just a few days later, QPR1 Beta 2 showed up for Pixel users, dropping right alongside the June Pixel Feature Drop. Most of the spotlight has been on the upgraded desktop mode, flexible window tiling, and more. However, there’s a sneaky little change tucked in too: Gemini now has a fresh launch animation that’s easy to miss but hard not to appreciate once you see it.

According to a report from 9to5Google, the search giant is testing out a new Gemini overlay animation where the screen subtly pulls back to make room for the AI assistant. The update doesn’t stop at visuals, as it throws in some haptic feedback for good measure, along with the usual options like “Share screen with Live” and “Ask about screen.”

Haptic feedback quirk (probably a bug)

9to5Google points out that in Beta 2, haptic feedback goes missing when launching Gemini using the power button. But since the usual Power menu still gives you that tactile feedback when it pops up, it’s likely just a software bug instead of a deliberate change.

As for the new animation, the screen gently pulls back as the new overlay slides up when Gemini is invoked. Right after that, you’ll see familiar options like “Share Screen with Live,” “Ask about screen,” and the usual “Ask Gemini” text box ready to go.

The effect makes it look like the screen’s borders are subtly shrinking, which is a neat visual trick. But don’t be surprised if you don’t see it yet; it’s part of a limited rollout and only a few Pixel devices are getting it for now.

Even with all the recent tweaks, Google seems to be holding back its big Material 3 Expressive makeover for a later release. Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 doesn’t pack the full visual revamp just yet. According to Mishaal Rahman via Android Authority, the plan is to roll out the new look on September 3.
