Gemini Apps Preps Letting You Generate 8-Second Videos With Veo 2

Last month, Google teased what’s coming next to Gemini Advanced, and work on letting Gemini app users generate video with Veo 2 is finalizing.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

Google app beta 16.11 reveals definitive strings about video generation: “Get high-quality videos with Veo 2, Gemini’s latest video generation model.” Google talked about Veo at I/O 2024 last May, and introduced Veo 2 in December.

To do so, you “describe your idea and Veo 2 will bring it to life with an 8-second video.” It will take 1-2 minutes for that short video to be generated.

There appears to be daily and monthly limits to video generation. At the moment, Veo 2 is behind a Google Labs waitlist (VideoFX), with Gemini app access presumably starting on the Advanced tier.

  • ”You’ve reached your video generation limit until tomorrow”
  • This video generation will still count toward your monthly limit

There will be a video player and the ability to download your video, as well as share it (presumably via link).

Availability in the Gemini app has been in-development over the past several weeks under the codename “toucan.” With strings in this release being updated to “Veo 2” and Google being explicit about the video generation nature, a Gemini release might be coming soon.

Back in February, Google teased “new ways to create with leading video, image, and audio generation tools.” All Gemini users currently have access to generating images with people using Imagen 3, while Audio Overviews were introduced last week. It’s interesting whether audio generation will continue with music generation.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, from which some APK Insight teardowns benefit.
