Galaxy S25 To Support 25W Qi2 Charging Without Built-In Magnets

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series will feature the Qi2 wireless charging, but according to reports, it won’t have built-in magnets like Apple’s MagSafe. Instead, you’ll need to buy a separate accessory to get the Qi2 wireless charging experience.

The rumor started when Ice Universe, a well-known leaker, confirmed Qi2 support for the Galaxy S25 series in a private chat on Weibo with @Jukanloseve. But it’s not exactly as it seems – another leak is now saying the Galaxy S25 series won’t natively support Qi2.

Galaxy S25 to support 25W wireless charging with a case for magnets

According to tipster Yawn (@chunvn8888), the Galaxy S25 series will support Qi2 wireless charging with charging speeds of up to 25W. But unlike iPhones that come with built-in magnets, the Galaxy S25 phones won’t have magnets for automatic alignment with Qi2 chargers. Instead, you’ll need to buy Samsung’s official “Magnet Case” for the best charging experience. The case will provide the magnetic alignment needed for the phone to charge properly at a faster speed.

Interestingly, other Android manufacturers like OPPO and OnePlus also use magnetic cases instead of integrating magnets into the phone. With the new Magnet Case, the S25 series can still meet the Qi2 standard but you’ll need to buy the accessory separately.

Why Samsung is not including built-in magnets in the Galaxy S25

The reason for not including built-in magnets in the Galaxy S25 series might be to save on production costs. Samsung might also be encouraging customers to buy its own accessories which would increase sales of the Magnet Cases. While some might not like this, the 25W wireless charging is still a nice upgrade from the 15W wireless charging on previous Samsung phones.

The Qi2 standard which brings easier alignment of charging accessories is a new wireless charging standard not yet widely adopted in the Android world. By supporting Qi2 Samsung is keeping up with the latest wireless charging trends even if it isn’t using the magnets that are part of the standard.

Speaking of wired charging speed, the base model is expected to offer 25W fast charging, while the Galaxy S25+ and S25 Ultra are likely to support faster 45W wired charging. According to leaks, Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S25 series on January 22. 2025.
