Verizon confirms that Skylo powers the Galaxy S25 series’ Satellite SOS messaging
Verizon has confirmed that the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra are compatible with Satellite SOS messaging. This Verizon feature allows users to send messages to emergency services even in areas where traditional cellular connectivity is not available. The US mobile carrier also confirmed that the option on Samsung’s latest flagship phones is powered by Skylo tech. This is the same company behind the satellite services available on the latest Google Pixel 9 series.
Ideally, you would never have to use satellite SOS services. That would mean you’re in the middle of an emergency situation and without access to traditional telecommunication vias. Anyway, it’s always good to have the option in case you need it.
Carriers testing non-emergency satellite telecommunications
Currently, some US carriers are working on offering non-emergency satellite SOS plans as well. That is, they want to enable calls, SMS, and even mobile network support without resorting to traditional terrestrial networks. These features could start arriving in the near future. T-Mobile was testing its satellite messaging feature on select devices last December. It’s noteworthy that Elon Musk’s Starlink powers T-Mobile’s satellite services.
Verizon adds a few things you should know about its satellite telecommunications. First, it currently only works on “select new model phones with updated software.” Also, it will work better or worse depending on your location or if there are obstructions to the satellites in your area. Lastly, the service “might not work in parts of Alaska.” The new Galaxy flagship mobile devices are now available for pre-order.
