The term “AI agent” is becoming increasingly popular in the world of artificial intelligence. Companies focused on the segment want to develop such systems as the industry’s next big thing. Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI, has announced the AI agent “Operator” which brings assistance with web browsing.

It’s noteworthy that AI agents could be the step before the AGI agents that OpenAI itself talked about earlier this year. AGI refers to AI-powered “entities” capable of performing practically any intellectual task that a person could do. On the other hand, AI agents continue to focus on specific tasks, but with a greater ability to make proactive decisions.

That said, Operator, an OpenAI’s AI agent, is already available as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the US. According to the company, Operator can do a number of useful things for you while you browse the web. It can interact with buttons, menus, and on-screen text fields for things like creating to-do lists, planning trips, and more. The AI ​​agent can confirm for itself whether all tasks on a list are complete and notify you if any are pending. It can also enter credentials for websites to log into your accounts, among other things.

“This capability marks the next step in AI development, allowing models to use the same tools humans rely on daily and opening the door to a vast range of new applications,” reads OpenAI’s blog post.

Going forward, it’s likely that there will be more AI agents on the market for consumers. Perplexity, another AI-focused firm, recently launched an AI agent-based assistant for Android. The app, called Perplexity Assistant, is capable of scheduling trips, setting reminders for events, and more. The latest Galaxy S25 series also got a feature with AI agent-based capabilities called Now Brief.
