The first sizable update to Apple TV for Android phones and tablets is here with version 1.1 today. The mobile app launched in February and has so far just seen patch updates.
On the homepage, Apple TV 1.1 adds auto-playing portrait clips that serve as concise trailers in the main carousel. It’s muted by default, with buttons in the top-right corner to unmute and quickly add a show or movie to your up next queue.
Meanwhile, Apple has added new controls for Automatic subtitles. You can have them:
- Show when Muted: Automatically turn on subtitles when the volume is muted or turned all the way down.
- Show on Skip Back: Temporarily turn on subtitles when you skip back, up to 30 seconds.
Both are existing options on Apple’s platforms, with the latter particularly clever.
Finally, there’s a new Auto-play setting to “Play a Recommendation: After a series, movie, or sporting event, automatically play content recommended for you.” It’s enabled by default, but can be disabled, like Play Next Episode.
Version 1.1 of Apple TV is rolling out now via the Play Store. The app doesn’t offer new episode notifications yet. Apple TV also doesn’t show your previous iTunes movie and TV show purchases. It’s unclear if that’s ever coming.
