Google To Reportedly Release Android 16 Much Earlier In June

In recent years, Google released the latest iteration of the Android OS in August or slightly later. However, the search engine giant could release the upcoming Android 16 version much earlier in June this year. Speaking at Mobile World Congress, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, confirmed the news that the company is on track to meet its self-imposed release date of the new Android iteration.

Google is on track to release Android 16 in June this year

Google has given itself a June release deadline for the Android 16 update. Usually, Google releases the new iteration of Android in August or later alongside the launch of a flagship Pixel smartphone. However, it is going to change in 2025 for development reasons. Samat said, “So far, so good. I’ve never had a release where at this point the bug count was where I wanted it to be, but the team is working really hard, and we’re excited about getting it there”.

The company is aiming to roll out the new Android software earlier this year due to development changes within the Android team. Google has switched to Trunk Stable development for the next big Android update. “Trunk Stable development means that everyone working on Android is contributing to the same branch of code,” said Samat. By switching to Trunk Stable development, Google can build the entire system more regularly and more quickly.

Android 16 is currently mid-way through its recent second beta release

Google rolled out the first Android 16 beta update toward the end of January. Soon after, the company released the Android 16 Beta 2 in the middle of January. Most recently, Google issued the Android 16 Beta 2.1 update by the end of February, including fixes for a few bugs. The company will reveal more details about the rollout of the final stable Android 16 update at the Google I/O 2025 event on May 20.
