Hands-On: The Oppo Find N5 Is The Hardware Pixel 9 Pro Fold Wants To Be [Gallery]

Last year’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold proved to be the most impressive generational upgrade we’ve seen in foldables to date, but it certainly wasn’t the “end” of pushing the envelope. Just a few months later, Oppo is now gearing up to launch the Find N5 as the “world’s thinnest” foldable and, after getting my hands on it, I can’t help but drawn comparisons to the Pixel.

The Oppo Find N5 has been teased for a while, but we’re quickly approaching the full unveiling on February 20. The new foldable has been touted as the “world’s thinnest” by Oppo, with previous teasers showing the device being barely thicker than its USB-C port.

I’ve had the pleasure of checking out the Oppo Find N5 in person as of late and while I can’t share much about it ahead of next week’s full reveal, what I can do is show off the hardware, which is easily the most intriguing back of the device.

Oppo has been really good at foldables since the beginning. The Find N and Find N2 were a masterclass in how to build this hardware, and their adorably compact form factors are ones I still miss today. In 2023, the company ditched the smaller footprint for a much larger and thinner device in the Find N3, which launched globally as the OnePlus Open. That was the device that really showed just where Oppo shines in foldables – building devices that are tough and full of attention to detail. That’s now been combined with what is truly an impressively thin form factor.

The Oppo Find N5 is just razor-thin, similar to Honor’s Magic V3 released last year. When unfolded, it’s a sight to behold. My first thought was really that, at this point, we’re done. There’s literally no need to make foldables any thinner than this because, when it’s closed, this device barely thicker than your average smartphone, if not still thinner than some options.

Oppo briefly published a video (which has since been taken down) which confirms the device is under 9mm when closed. Since that’s not been publicly confirmed anywhere else, though, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Should it prove true, though, it does line up with Oppo’s claim of this device being the “world’s thinnest” foldable.

For the bulk of last year, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold was the foldable that I felt fit that same goal. It was thin enough to where you’d never really notice a huge difference compared to a normal smartphone when it’s closed. I still think that’s mostly true, but Oppo is really showing what today’s tech is capable of, and I have to imagine that the Find N5 is pretty close to what Google was ultimately aiming for with its latest Pixel foldable.

There are a lot of similarities between these two devices, with the same matte but tacky finish to the metal frame and a frosted glass back that’s also still pretty grippy. I can’t show the displays yet, but Oppo really pushes the envelope to where, again, I think Google probably wanted the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to be.

The inner display is also just downright impressive, with virtually zero noticeable crease running down the center. Find N3/OnePlus Open was already so good in this regard, and it’s amazing that despite chopping off so much of the thickness, Oppo made improvements this time around.

The Oppo Find N5 is set to be unveiled on February 20 and appears to be ready for a global release this time around. There’s been no word yet on a OnePlus version of this device, but it’s highly likely that such a device is in the pipeline.
