Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cases Might Take Up More Space
Contents
There’s a new rumor about the Nintendo Switch 2, but it doesn’t have to do with specs or features, it has to do with the size of the game cases. If you own an original Nintendo Switch or a Nintendo Switch OLED, or if you’ve simply seen the game cases for the original Switch games, then you know how small they are. They’re almost the same height as a PS4 or PS5 game case, but they’re about half the width. They’re also thinner. Basically, it’s easy to fit quite a lot of them on your shelf.
That might be changing with the Nintendo Switch 2 though. A recent rumor suggests that Nintendo may have increased the size of the Switch 2 game cases. If that’s true, then you may need to look at clearing some space on your shelves to fit these new games. You may even need new shelving entirely.
We suppose it would all depend on how many physical games you might buy for Nintendo’s new console. Some prefer to collect physical games while others have no problem going all digital. After all, it certainly takes up less space storing a bunch of microSD cards than it does physical game cases. That being said, having a nice physical game collection is something to behold. Those wanting to hold true to that will need to consider if they currently have the space to store a bunch of these new cases.
Nintendo Switch 2 game cases could be taller than PS5 game cases
It’s worth keeping in mind that this is just a rumor, so take the dimensions with a grain of salt. That being said, according to @necorlipe on X (via TechRadar and Nintendolife), the Nintendo Switch 2 game case will be 13cm wide and 19.5cm tall. That’s about 5.1 inches wide and 7.4 inches tall. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch cases are 10.4cm wide and 16.9cm tall. So these will be noticeably bigger.
In comparison to a PS5 game case, the size is almost the same. The width of a PS5 game case is about 13.5cm and the height is 17cm. So the Switch 2 cases might not be quite as wide but they’ll be almost there. If the dimensions of this rumor are accurate.
Will this impact the size of the Switch 2 game carts?
It’s unclear if the Nintendo Switch 2 physical cartridge sizes will be any bigger than games from the original model. However, it is clear that Nintendo Switch 2 will be backward compatible with physical Switch games. As Nintendo has already confirmed this.
With that in mind, it seems likely that the cartridges themselves will be much bigger than the originals. If they’re any bigger at all. It also may not really matter. Because the Switch 2 is the only thing you’ll slotting those cartridges into anyways.
