Summary

  • Google will update its Find My Device app with Ultra Wideband support for more precise directional tracking.
  • Ahead of that, a screenshot gives us a look at the new UI featuring a real-time distance indicator and an arrow for easier location finding.
  • UWB support should roll out in the Find My Device app and for the Moto Tag later this month.

Google rolled out major improvements to its Find My Device app in 2024, including an Apple-like network that helps locate your lost or stolen Android phone even when offline. Yet, the app fell short of expectations. As part of its Find Hub revamp, Google will address many of the app’s shortcomings, including adding Ultra Wideband support. The feature will roll out later this month, but a screenshot already offers a glimpse of how the new UWB directional UI will provide more information.

With Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, Google’s Find My Device/Find Hub app can provide more precise, centimeter-level directional instructions to find lost items. While phones and trackers like the Pixel 9 Pro and Moto Tag have the requisite hardware, Google never leveraged it to offer an AirTag-like tracking experience. This will change later this month, as the company prepares to roll out close-range location tracking capabilities, with the Moto Tag being the first to support it.

Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii posted a screenshot on X showing the new UWB directional UI in the Find My Device app. It features a large on-screen arrow pointing toward the Moto Tag, along with a real-time distance indicator.

Like before, you also get a speaker and a Play sound button at the bottom. But beyond that, the new UI marks a significant upgrade over the current Find My Device interface, which requires you to move around and fill a vague shape to locate a tracker.

Find My Device experience is about to get a lot better

In its announcement, Google said it will roll out UWB support in the Find My Device app later this month. So, if you have a Moto Tag, you should gain access to the new UI and more precise navigational directions to find the tagged item within the next couple of weeks.

Google has big plans for Find Hub, including adding support for products from luggage brands like Mokobara and July and integrating satellite connectivity to help with location tracking in areas with no cellular network. It’s also partnering with airlines so you can share your luggage’s location with them, making it easier to track down if it ever goes missing.
