Google Is Pulling The Plug On Older Nest Thermostats

Summary

  • Google will end support for the first and second generations of the Nest Learning Thermostat on October 25, 2025, removing smart features and app integration, effectively turning them into basic manual thermostats.
  • Google is also exiting the thermostat business in Europe, with no future Nest thermostat releases planned for the region.
  • Users in the US and Canada will receive discounts on the latest Nest Learning Thermostat (Gen 4) to ease the transition, while users in Europe will get 50 percent discount on the Tado Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit..

Google plans to stop supporting three of its oldest thermostats in a bid to focus its attention on its latest generation of Nest thermostats.

The development, which was announced by the Google Nest team in a blog post today, essentially turns perfectly good hardware into inferior versions of themselves with severely limited functionality.

First things first, these are the thermostats that will no longer receive software updates starting October 25, 2025:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011)
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012)
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2014, European version)

Users with said devices will still be able to use them to adjust the temperature and modify schedules directly on the thermostat. Existing schedules that you’ve already set via the Nest app will remain in place. Users will, however, lose the functionality to control the thermostats remotely via their phone or with Google Assistant. Third-party assistants and other connected features like Home/Away Assist are also expected to stop working, essentially turning the smart home device into a, well, home device.

“Your device will be unpaired and removed from your Nest app or Home app. You won’t be able to check the status of your thermostat in the Nest or Home app, remotely control the device, receive notifications, or change settings from your phone or tablet,” wrote Google in a new support post. Said devices won’t receive any security updates either, and users might “experience an unpredictable decline in performance if [they] attempt to use [their non-supported thermostats] continuously.”

All other Nest Thermostat models remain unaffected, at least for now.

Users in Europe are fighting a different battle

In addition to the end-of-life for Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011, 2nd gen, 2012, and 2nd gen, 2014, European version), Google is shuttering its thermostat business in Europe. “Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes,” explained Google, adding that Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen, 2015) and Nest Thermostat E (2018) would be unavailable to purchase in the region after the current inventory sells out.

Similar to other regions, Google will continue offering support for the 2015 and 2018 models in Europe.

Thanks, I guess?

Google, after kicking users down, is extending a helping hand to those who wish to upgrade. The tech giant said it will reach out to affected Nest Thermostat users via email with a personalized link to region-specific special offers.

  • In the US: Users can expect to get $130 off the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
  • In Canada: Users can expect to get $160 (CAD) off the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
  • In Europe: Users can expect to get 50 percent off the Tado Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit.
