Teens Are Still Picking The IPhone As Their Phone Of Choice: Survey

Summary: Piper Sandler’s latest survey shows teens are still choosing the iPhone as their phone of choice. However, Apple’s services like Apple Music and Apple TV+ aren’t keeping up. Rising tariffs are threatening to push iPhone prices even higher. Apple’s future dominance in the teen market could be at risk.

If you’re reading our site, chances are you’re an Android fan and user. However, when it comes to the teen segment, Apple’s iPhone seems to be the clear winner. This is according to Piper Sandler’s latest survey, which found that teens are still picking the iPhone as their phone of choice.

The teen smartphone of choice

According to their survey, the number of teens who want the iPhone as their next phone has increased by 3% since April 2024. Apple has long dominated the teen market, going as far back as April 2015, when 66% of teens surveyed owned an iPhone. However, while Apple dominates the teen market in terms of smartphone demand, the company is missing out on revenue from its services.

For example, Apple subscription services such as Apple TV+ aren’t as popular among teens. Neither is its Apple Music service, which still trails behind Spotify. While 45% of teens surveyed have a paid Spotify subscription, Apple Music commands only 30%.

Yes, of course Apple makes a lot of money from its iPhone sales. However, subscriptions and paid services is where the company makes sustainable revenue. After all, once Apple makes money from a hardware sale, that’s it. Whereas with services, Apple can generate revenue every month even if customers don’t upgrade to the latest iPhone.

The future of the iPhone

That being said, we have to wonder what the future holds for the iPhone. Trump’s recent tariffs on China is pretty nuts at 125%. This means that in the future, iPhones could cost considerably more than they do today. Seeing as how most teens don’t have earning power, it will be a tough job to try and convince parents to pay for a $3,500 smartphone.

Apple has reportedly stockpiled a number of iPhones that should last it a few months. However, it is unclear what will happen once the stock diminishes. Unless Trump softens his stance against China, or if Apple works out a deal with Trump that would allow it to escape the tariffs, the future of the iPhone and smartphones in the US could be in jeopardy.
