Google Discontinues Nest Protect And Nest X Yale Lock, 3rd-Party Successors Coming

Google announced today that it is no longer manufacturing the 2013/15 Nest Protect or 2018 Nest x Yale Lock, but has some third-party alternatives lined up.

Existing Nest Protect Smoke & CO alarms will “continue to receive security updates and continue to work as they always have through their expiration dates” of 10 years (for the 2nd gen model). The Google Store and other retailers will keep selling them “while supplies last.

As a successor, Google has partnered on the Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm from First Alert, which is owned by Resideo (a Honeywell spin-off). Notably, it will appear in the Google Home app and interconnect with existing Nest Protects.

For example, if your Nest Protect in the hallway says, “Emergency, there’s smoke in the hallway,” your other Nest Protects and First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm will also let you know what and where the danger is.

This new alarm offers early warnings for an “emerging smoke or CO event before it becomes an emergency,” and critical safety alerts (via voice that describes the emergency type + location and mobile notifications). Hardwire and battery-powered versions are available.

Touting “broad Wi-Fi range,” there’s also easy installation if you’re replacing a Nest Protect. The First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm costs $129.99 and will be available over the coming months in the US and Canada, with pre-orders available today.

The Nest x Yale Lock will “continue to be supported with security updates without interrupting lock functionality.” Passcode management is coming to Google Home after previously requiring the Nest app “later this year.” It will also remain on sale until inventory runs out.

Meanwhile, Google is partnering on the Yale Smart Lock with Matter. Coming this summer, it’s “designed to complement Nest doorbells.” Read more here

In January, the Google Home app gained support (in Public Preview) for the Nest Protect and Matter door locks.

We look forward to working with First Alert, Yale, and many others to continue the wave of innovation that Nest Protect and Nest x Yale locks ushered into our homes. We appreciate you staying with us as we make these adjustments to build a smarter and more helpful home than ever before.
