Discord Is Bringing Its ‘Quest’ Ads To The Mobile App This Summer

Discord is bringing its video quest ads to the mobile app later this year. If you’re unfamiliar with Discord Quests, they often task you with watching a short video about a game. As an incentive for watching the video Discord gives you a reward that you can redeem. These can be anything from Discord avatar frames to in-game digital items.

Sometimes the quests task you with playing a certain game and streaming it to your friends instead of watching a video. They may not always be for games you play often, but it might be worth it for the reward. The same goes for the video ads. You may not care for the game that the ad is about, but you might like the reward. It’s worth noting that the ads on mobile should be for mobile games. Whereas the video ads on the desktop app are for games you can play on PC.

These video ads are designed to be sort of out of the way and not really in your face, so they’re easy to ignore. You also never have to accept a quest if you don’t want to. And therein lies one of the best parts about how Discord is implementing these on mobile devices.

Discord Mobile Video Ads

Discord mobile ads will only play if you accept a quest

Where some mobile ads can be annoying it appears Discord is trying to implement them in a way that doesn’t invoke the ire of its users. Much like the quest bar pop-ups that appear in the desktop app, video ads on the mobile app will appear as a quest bar at the bottom of the screen. You can dismiss these or tap on them to bring the quest up, but the ads won’t play unless you accept the quest, The Verge says.

This puts a little more control in the hands of the user and still gives the company that the ad is for a chance to reach new levels of engagement. And with these being less intrusive in this way, it seems more likely that users would be inclined to engage with them.

It’s possible to opt out of promotions altogether

To take things even further, Discord will do more than just let you hide these quests. You can also opt out of personal promotions. Essentially, Discord is just rolling over the experience from the desktop app. Because this is how the desktop app quests work. The mobile ads will be rolled out to the app in June of this year. That means there are still a few months before these arrive.
